The Legend of Master Stoorworm

Master Stoorworm - also known as "Mester Stoorworm" - was an ancient Celtic dragon of the wyrm or worm variety. He was known as "Master" because he was the first, the biggest and the baddest of all the Celtic Stoorworms.

Master Stoorworm was a huge, wingless sea serpent. His breath was venemous and every morning when he yawned he would swallow cattle, people and even ships. He also had a huge forked tongue and when angry could lash out with this and raze whole villages.

The King called for warriors to defeat Master Stoorworm and offered not only the hand of his daughter but also his great sword. Many warriors answered the call but all were defeated or driven away by the serpent's poisonous breath.

Assipattle

In the end the dragon-serpent was beaten not by a brave warrior but by a young boy by the name of Assipattle.

Early one morning Assipattle took an urn full of peat and sailed a small boat out to where the monster Stoorworm slept. When the wyrm awoke it yawned and Assipattle allowed himself to be sucked into its great serpent body.

Once inside, Asipattle set light to the peat. The fire caused Master Stoorworm to writhe and scream, ejecting Assipattle as he did so. The Stoorworm continued to struggle but was eventually killed by the flame.

It is said that Master Stoorworm's teeth formed the Orkney, Shetland and Faroe Islands whilst his crumpled body became Iceland.
