Ten years on from the release of the original game, the latest adventure for Spyro the Dragon is now available to buy in the US.
Spyro the Dragon: Dawn of the Dragon starts where the previous game ended, with Spyro and Cynder chained together. A new feature allows the player to switch between either character, the two dragons having different combat styles and abilities. A new developer (Etranges Libellules) has been brought in, giving the game world a different visual style which looks even better on next-gen consoles such as the PS3 or XBox 360. Another new feature is the ability to fly at any time.
The voice acting cast is impressive and includes Elijah Wood, Gary Oldman and Mark Hamill.
Dawn of the Dragon is supposedly the last of the Spyro games. We'll see.
If you're looking to buy dragon books for kids you might like this article in The Times. Amanda Craig looks at a number of new dragon books on the market. Craig clearly knows her draconology and says:
"Dragons have probably had more written about them than any other mythological creature. From Brian Patten's hauntingly tender poem A Small Dragon to Ogden Nash's bouncy The Tale of Custard the Dragon, they have come to represent a great many contradictory aspects of our own nature, as a clutch of recent dragon books shows."
Bioware's forthcoming RPG Dragon Age: Origins (DAO) had originally been discussed as a PC only release. However it has now been confirmed that DAO will be released on two high end consoles: versions for the PS3 and Xbox360 are due to be released in time for the 2009 holiday buying season.
There's no word yet on how much importance dragons will play in the game, but given the phrase "Dragon Age" I'm hoping they'll be a significant presence.
One of the highlights of the upcoming (2011) movie The Hobbit will, hopefully, be the dragon Smaug. Director Guillermo del Toro has declared himself a lifelong dragon fan and noted that he was born in a Chinese year of the dragon (1964).
Del Torro - probably most famous for the 2006 movie Pan's Labyrinth - has spoken of his determination to get the movie Smaug right, saying that it will probably be one of the first pieces of design attempted - and the last completed!
According to del Toro it's "a matter of turning every stone before figuring out what he looks like, because what he looks like will tell you what he is".
Sounds like Smaug the Magnificent is in safe hands.
